Reviewing Submissions
Mark assessment work from your learners one item after another, and grade and override submissions.
Last updated 22 Oct 2026
Review and give feedback on assessment work from your learners. Your marking follows the same rule as the review email, so the work you are emailed about is the work waiting in your queue.
Access required
Sign in with a login linked to your trainer record to use your own marking. Assignment, course scope and assessor authorisation still apply. The organisation-wide permissions at the end of this guide are separate from your own marking.
Your marking
When work is waiting, Today shows a task such as Mark 3 submissions with Start marking. Start marking opens your oldest waiting item. Each judgement you make opens the next one, so you can mark one after another. Select Skip for now to leave an item for later, or Marking to go back to the list.
The Marking page lists:
- Your learners: work from learners you are set to mark, oldest first
- Shared: work from learners with no trainer set, which any authorised assessor can mark
- Other trainers' learners: work you could also mark, folded away below
Each item shows whether it is an assessment, an Online lesson or an assessment task, and when it was handed in. A practical observation you have started stays in your own marking.
Online Lesson submissions belong to the learner's enrolment and the lesson attempt, so you can also review a learner delivered through a direct booking who is not in a class.
Reviewing a submission
Open an item to see its review page. Responses shows the learner's answers from the version of the assessment they attempted, including text answers, choices and uploaded files. Details shows when the work was submitted and reviewed.
Grading a submission
Select Review & Score. Score each question, add feedback, and add overall feedback in Review Notes, then save one of two outcomes:
- Approve: the student has demonstrated what the assessment requires.
- Reject: the work does not yet meet the requirements.
If the assessment has a pre-authorised payment, approving captures the payment and rejecting cancels it.
After saving, review the learner’s saved contact details and full result message. Select each email, SMS or calendar invitation you want to send, then choose Send selected. Every message starts unselected. Choose Finish without sending to skip them all. When you opened the submission from your marking, the next item opens after you finish this review.
Writing feedback
- Be specific about what was done well.
- For a Not Satisfactory result, explain what needs more work.
- Refer to the course materials the student should review.
Example feedback
For Satisfactory:
"Well done! Your responses demonstrate a clear understanding of WHS requirements. Evidence provided meets all criteria."
For Not Satisfactory:
"The responses show gaps in understanding of workplace hazard identification. Please review the course materials and attempt the assessment again after completing the additional activities."
After grading
Once you submit your review:
- The submission status and per-question feedback update.
- The learner can open the reviewed result from Assessment Results.
- After a Not Satisfactory Online Lesson result, a retry keeps the answers that were already satisfactory and shows the responses that need rework.
- A Satisfactory Online Lesson result completes that lesson. Unit and attendance requirements are still checked separately.
Use Edit Scores & Feedback to change scores and feedback after a review. When a Not Satisfactory learner has used every attempt, Grant Extra Attempts lets them try again. The extra attempts reopen every section that ran out, counted from the attempts the learner has already used, so they can change the answers that need rework.
A retry comes back to you for review, instead of passing on its own, when you overrode the earlier attempt to Not Satisfactory, or when the learner resubmits an answer you rejected without changing it.
Overriding a submission status
After a submission has been reviewed as Satisfactory or Not Satisfactory, anyone who can mark it can override the status to correct a grading mistake.
Open the reviewed submission
Open the submission. Once it has been reviewed, an Override Status card appears below the review.
Enter override details
The card shows the current status and what it will be changed to (the opposite status).
Reason for overrideRequiredExplain why the status is being changed. This is required and recorded in the review notes for audit purposes.
Confirm the override
Select Override to Satisfactory or Override to Not Satisfactory, then select Confirm Override.
The override reason is appended to the review notes with a timestamp. If the submission is linked to a course, the student's course progress is recalculated automatically.
Note
Submission scores are calculated based on the questions served to the student, not the entire question bank. If assessment questions are edited after submission, the review panel notes which choices are no longer available.
Note
Reviewing an Online Lesson does not record an AVETMISS competency outcome. Record unit results on your class day when you are authorised to assess that unit, or ask the office to record them on the enrolment’s Competency outcomes tab.
Legacy assessment history (after moving to Online Lessons)
When an organisation moves to the Online Lessons runtime, assessment submissions recorded under the previous classic runtime become read-only historical evidence:
- They no longer appear in the review queue, as there is nothing left to action on them.
- On an enrolment's Work Queue tab, a Legacy assessment history section lists them with their status, score and review notes, so the enrolment's complete evidence trail stays visible for audits.
- Opening a legacy submission shows a Historical evidence (read-only) notice. Review, feedback editing, status overrides, extra attempts and response remapping are turned off. The record stays exactly as it was reviewed, including the question snapshot it was attempted against.
- Learners keep seeing their old results in Assessment Results alongside any new Online Lesson attempts.
LLN, Learner Engagement surveys and Third Party Reports stay active and reviewable under Online Lessons.
Tips for effective reviews
- Review submissions promptly to keep students progressing
- Provide constructive, actionable feedback
- Reference specific course materials when suggesting review
- Be consistent in applying assessment criteria
- Contact your administrator if you're unsure about borderline cases
Organisation-wide marking
Office staff can view and grade attempts across the organisation, outside their own marking, with these permissions.
| Task | Required access |
|---|---|
| View attempts in the organisation marking workflow | Assessments and marking: View |
| Grade attempts in the organisation marking workflow | Assessments and marking: Edit |
