Manage Units of Competency
Open Training → Configuration → Units of Competency, then select a unit to review its details, validation records, and change history. Changing unit configuration requires Courses and units: Manage.
Access required
Choose the task you are doing. Each row is a separate action.
| Task | Required access |
|---|---|
| View units of competency | Courses and units: View |
| Change unit configuration | Courses and units: Manage |
Assessment validation is separate from viewing or editing a unit and requires both assessment and compliance access.
Review or edit a unit
Open the unit
Search the Active, Archived, or All list by unit code or name, then select the unit you need.
Check the details
The Details tab shows the unit code, name, field of education, nominal hours, VET flag, and record history. A superseded unit also shows its replacement code and transition dates.
Update the record
Select Edit, change the required fields, then select Save. You can also archive a unit that is no longer used, or restore an archived unit.
Unit CodeRequiredThe nationally recognised unit code. It can contain up to 12 characters.
Unit NameRequiredThe full title of the unit of competency.
Field of Education IDThe six-character field of education classification used for reporting.
Nominal HoursThe expected nominal delivery hours. Enter a whole number of zero or more.
VET FlagChoose whether the unit is vocational education and training activity for reporting purposes.
Superseded ByThe replacement unit code when this unit has been superseded. You can also record the superseded date and transition end date.
Warning
Check your scope, transition plan, and regulator guidance before replacing or archiving a superseded unit. Existing course and learner records may still refer to it.
Record assessment validation
| Task | Required access |
|---|---|
| Prepare or record assessment validation | Courses and units: View and Assessments and marking: Edit and Compliance and CPD: Edit |
Open the Validation tab and select Add Record. Record the validation date, validator, method, findings, actions taken, and next review date where applicable. The available methods include peer review, industry consultation, student feedback, benchmarking, and other.
Validation records are maintained on the Validation tab. To review database changes, use the separate unit audit history.
Requirements used by Course Design
A unit can hold an imported release of its official requirements. Adding that unit to a course links the held release. When its first release arrives later, RTObase links courses already using the unit. If a legacy course has no official release linked, choose Use unit requirements in Course Design to link the stored release. Its existing organisation requirements remain available.
If checking for a newer release fails, the imported release remains available.
A course designed against an older release keeps that release until it adopts the replacement. Review changed requirements and coverage before accepting a new source. Exact matches can retain accepted mapping work; unmatched requirements still need a decision.
Unit audit history
| Task | Required access |
|---|---|
| Review unit audit history | Courses and units: View and Audit log: View |
Audit access is separate from viewing or changing the record. Grant it only to members who need to review change history.
